Fake Chain Mail

Description

This is my fake chain mail for a costume I'm working on (Sabriel from the book by Garth Nix). The design is not really original, it was modified from a pattern but the modifications were quite small. I posted this here because I wanted to share the technique I used for making fake chain mail. I used waffle muslin which I dyed dark grey, and then I brushed it with silver fabric paint, which makes the top layer silver but leaves the indentations dark.

Knitting has been a fairly common way of making fake chain mail before, but, although I can knit, I am better at sewing, and can certainly sew a garment like this much faster than I can knit it. I wanted to see if there was a good way to make a purchased fabric look like the texture of chain mail, and I'm fairly satisfied with this.

What's the name of the material you used? Cause the only clothing I know that uses this type of material are the chainmail bodycon dressesand skirts from Topshop, and it can be quite expensive buying multiple bodycon dresses and skirts with this design when making chainmail costumes.
